Passau

Passau é a primeira cidade alemã a ser visitada neste itinerário e ponto de referência para todos os navios que por aqui passam. É uma cidade relativamente pequena, na região baixa da Baviera e atravessada por 3 rios: Danúbio (por nós navegado), Inn  e Ilz.

Passau is the first german to be visited on this itinerary and point of reference for all ships that sail through here. Is a relatively small town, in the lower region of Bavaria and crossed by three rivers: Danube (by us sailed), Inn and Ilz.

É também conhecida por razões menos felizes: as cheias. É raro o ano que esta cidade não sofra com tal acontecimento e nas paredes dos prédios podemos encontrar as marcas deixadas pelas águas. Nada que os habitantes não estejam já habituados, é só mais um ano normal para eles.

Ideal para se fazer caminhadas até ao topo do Forte ou para umas compras ao ar livre, Passau tem actividades para todos os gostos.

It is also known for less happy reasons: the floods. It is rare the year that this city doesn't suffer from such an event and on the walls of the buildings we can find the marks left by the waters. Nothing that this people are no longer used, it's just a normal year for them.

Ideal to hike to the top of the fort or some outdoor shopping, Passau has activities that suit all tastes.

A Catedral de São Estevão, considerada a maior igreja Católica com orgão no Mundo, sendo este o maior da Europa - 17.974 tubos e 233 pedaleiras. Aqui, exibe-se um concerto de orgão, de Maio a Outubro às 12h, com duração de cerca de 30 minutos e os bilhetes podem ser comprados à entrada da Catedral.

St. Stephen's Cathedral, considered the largest Catholic church with organ in the world, with the largest organ in Europe - 17,974 pipes and 233 stops. Here, you can listen to an organ concert from May to October at 12h, lasting about 30 minutes and tickets can be purchased at the entrance of the Cathedral.

Spring is yet to come

Tem sido difícil manter o blog actualizado, tão rápido quanto gostaria, uma vez que a internet não está a cooperar connosco. Por isso, um conselho, se vão navegar num cruzeiro: levem a vossa internet convosco!

A Primavera tem chegado aos poucos à Austria e até à semana passada, ainda nevava em Melk. Foi lindo ver a espectacular Abadia num cenário de inverno, mas não há nada como a primavera com as flores a brotarem.

Já lá vai um ano desde a última vez que tive em Melk e é sempre um lugar com o seu próprio encanto. Do parque de estacionamento, a escadaria bem à nossa frente, com 64 degraus, aguarda ser pisada. A entrada, oh a entrada…preparem as câmaras, porque é belíssima! A propósito, podemos fotografar praticamente tudo, dentro da Abadia, com a excepção de uma ou duas salas. Eu fico sempre fascinada pelos tectos das igrejas, e este não foi excepção.

It's been hard to keep updating the blog as fast as I wish, since the internet connection is not cooperating with us. So, one advice, if you're sailing away in a cruise: take your own internet stick!

Spring have only arrived this week to Austria and until last week, was still snowing in Melk. It was beautiful to see the spectacular Abbey in a winter scenario, but there's nothing like spring, with flowers sprouting.

It's been a year since the last time I've been to Melk and it's always a place with it's own and particular charm. From the parking lot the staircase face us, with the 64 steps waiting to be stepped. 
The entrance, oh the entrance...prepare your cameras, because it is stunning! By the way, you can photograph almost everywhere inside the Abbey, with the exception of one or two rooms. I'm always amazed with the churches ceilings, so this one, was no exception.

A visita demora cerca de duas horas e posso dizer-vos que, para os que têm alguma dificuldade em andar, é melhor levar a visita com calma. Não que o trajecto seja difícil, mas sim porque há muito que percorrer. As cadeiras de rodas são permitidas.

Amanhã Passau aguarda-nos.

It will take you about two hours to visit the entire Abbey and I can tell that, for the ones who have trouble walking, is better to take a slower pace. Is not that the route is hard, is just because there's a lot to see and walk through. Wheelchairs are allowed.

Tomorrow Passau is waiting for us.

Mom, Dad, I'm here!!

Oh Wien, I was missing you!

Another season has started, and here I am, in Wien, getting ready for it.

This time, to arrive here, I flew with Brussels Airlines, a member of Star Alliance, like TAP Portugal, but unlike this last one, Brussels Airlines don't have meals on board for Light & Relax Package Flight. Anyway, I just brought 9 extra kg for a small price and that was really helpful.

After 2 flights, connecting in Brussels, where I had a Playstation station (yes, is exactly what you are thinking) just next to my embarkation door, I caught a train, from Wien Airport, directly to the city center for only 4,40€. Not the CAT train, the regular one. Every 15 minutes there's one and it's half an hour drive.

I met my friend Rui in Landstrasse Mitte Wien and together we went to his and his girlfriend' house where a beautiful cooked meal was already wanting for my starving stomach. We had a nice Austrian Red Wine after dinner and went to sleep early 'cause a long day was waiting for me today. Also a very nice and comfortable sofa-bed was prepared for me! I'm so spoiled!!

I woke up around 8 am, had breakfast and went out with Rui. We've slipt in the subway and I went directly to the ship where I've met my new colleagues. Again the only Portuguese on board, but is something that I'm already getting used to it.

Lot of things to learn in this few days ahead!

Cruising

De volta aos cruzeiros, a nossa última paragem foi em Budapeste. Após dois dias de trabalho intenso entre desembarque e embarque, novas caras para conhecer e uma cidade para percorrer, navegamos rumo a Bratislava, na Eslováquia. 

Esta é, com muita pena minha, das poucas cidades deste roteiro, onde não há uma única fotografia da minha autoria, ou onde tenha algo de relevante para escrever sobre a cidade em si. E não, não é porque Bratislava não é uma cidade interessante, mas sim porque a vida de quem trabalha em cruzeiros nem sempre passa por visitar as cidades e também há que pisá-las, como se dali já pertencêssemos. 

Aqui, era sempre ponto de paragem para comprar vegetais e lacticínios, e onde os produtos eram frescos e agradáveis.

Quem sabe se não é nesta temporada que fico a conhecer esta cidade como deve ser.

E vocês, já foram a Bratislava?

Back to the cruises, our last stop was in Budapest. After two days of intense work between landing and boarding, new faces to meet and a city to visit, we sailed towards Bratislava, in Slovakia.

This is, unfortunately, one of the few cities in this itinerary, where there is not a single photograph of my own, or where I have something relevant to share with you about the city itself. And no, it's not because Bratislava is not an interesting city, but for those who work on cruise, life is not only for visiting the cities, we should also walk like we belong there. 

Here, it was always a stopping place to buy vegetables and dairy products, and where the products were fresh and nice.

Who knows if it's not this season that I'm going to know this city as it should be.

Um nova temporada está a chegar e com ela muitos preparativos também. Entre o part-time de inverno, há a renovação de passaporte, a checklists de documentos e mais papelada para tratar.

Sei que estou com falta de atraso, mas a partilha está a ser retomada.

Day 3: Sintra

Ir a Lisboa e não conhecer Sintra é como ir ao McDonalds e não comer um hamburguer (a menos que seja para ir buscar as deliciosas tartes de maçã, mas isso não conta). Por isso, no 3º dia da Anna em Lisboa, resolvi levá-la aos arredores, para uma das vilas mais bonitas que conheço: Sintra.

Sintra é uma vila extremamente romântica e com um encanto natural. Não viemos com as nossas caras metade, mas divertimo-nos na mesma.

Pela manhã, encontrámos o Alex novamente, desta vez em frente à estação de comboios do Rossio, no Starbucks, para um café matinal. Para não perdermos muito tempo, levámos o café para o caminho, pois ainda tínhamos uma viagem de meia hora. Com companhia, faz-se muito bem e os comboios para Sintra partem com bastante frequência.

Há muitos pontos de interesse nesta vila e, vamos ser realistas, se as coisas querem ser vistas com calma, de maneira a termos tempo de absorver toda a beleza que nos rodeia, eu diria que dois dias não são suficientes para visitar Sintra. Como só tínhamos o dia de hoje, optámos pela Quinta da Regaleira (classificado como Património Mundial pela UNESCO no âmbito da " Paisagem Cultural de Sintra ") e o Palácio da Pena (uma das sete maravilhas de Portugal).

À saída da estação, já em Sintra, aproveitei para mostrar o Café Saudade. Este café tem um ar rústico e produtos típicos da zona, sendo um foco de atenção para todos os que passam por ele. Eu, não escapando à regra, sempre que venho a Sintra, paro ali.

Go to Lisbon and don't visit Sintra is like going to McDonalds and don't eat a burger (unless is just to pick the delicious apple pies, but that doesn't count). So, on the 3rd day of Anna in Lisbon, I decided to take her to the surroundings of Lisbon, to one of the most beautiful villages I know: Sintra.
Sintra is an extremely romantic village, with a natural charm. We did not come with our better half, but we had a good time anyway.

In the morning, we found Alex again, this time in front of Rossio's train station, at the Starbucks for a coffee. We didn't want to lose too much time, so we took the coffee for the road, because we still had a half hour trip. With the right company, the trip is done very well and there are trains to Sintra running quite often.

There are many points of interest in this village and, let's be realistic, if things want to be seen with calm, in order to have time to absorb all the beauty around us, I would say that two days are not enough to visit Sintra. We only had this day, so we opted for Quinta da Regaleira (classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO within the "Cultural Landscape of Sintra") and Pena Palace (one of the seven wonders of Portugal).


While leaving the station, already in Sintra, I showed Café Saudade. This cafe has a rustic feel and typical products of this area, being a focus of attention for all who pass through it. I do not escape the rule...whenever I come to Sintra, stop there.

Depois de namorarmos todos os encantos e recantos desta casa, seguimos rumo ao centro e à famosa Quinta. São cerca de 20 minutos a pé, desde a estação até à vila e mais 10 mins até à Regaleira. Pelo caminho, encontramos diversas estátuas, cada uma com a sua história, o Parque da Liberdade, o Museu Anjos Teixeira, o Palácio Nacional, além de toda a arquitectura inserida na natureza da Serra de Sintra, em que uma não ofusca a outra e ambas nos deixam deslumbrados. Isto tudo em 20 minutos de caminho? Sim! Como eu disse, muito para ver e absorver em Sintra.

After courting all the charms and crannies of this house, we follow towards the center and the famous Regaleira. It is 20 minutes walk from the station to the village and 10 mins to Regaleira. Across our way, we found several statues, each one with its own story, the Freedom Park, the Museum Teixeira Angels, the National Palace, and the whole architecture inserted in the nature of the Sintra hills, where one don't overshadow the other one and both leave us dazzled. All of this in a 20 minutes walk? Yes! As I said, lots of things to see and absorb in Sintra.

A sedutora Quinta da Regaleira já nos esperava com o seu Palácio de fachada Gótica, muito característica, à entrada. O bilhete no inverno tem um preço reduzido, assim como os horários de visita dos pontos de interesse de Sintra. As últimas admissões são às 17h.

Passeámos  durante 4 horas, sem dar pelo tempo passar, até que a fome apertasse. Explorámos as Grutas, a Capela, e a mítica Torre, conhecida pela sua escadaria e tudo o que poderíamos encontrar por ali. Deixo-vos com algumas fotografias que tirámos pelo caminho.

The seductive Quinta da Regaleira was waiting for us with his Palace with Gothic facade, very characteristic, at the entrance. The ticket in winter has a reduced price, as well as the visiting hours of every points of interest in Sintra. The last admissions are at 5pm.

We walked for 4 hours, without realizing how much time was passing, until hunger shake. We explored the caves, the Chapel, and the mythical Tower, known for its staircase and everything we could find there. I leave you with some pictures we took along the way.

Almoçámos pelo centro da vila, perto das três e meia da tarde. As horas passaram ao longo do dia e nem demos por elas. Ainda seguimos, rumo ao Palácio da Pena, no topo da colina, mas infelizmente, por uma falha de 5 minutos, já não nos deixaram comprar bilhete para a última visita. Ficámos a admirá-lo de fora, com o sentimento de que teríamos de cá voltar brevemente.

We had lunch at the village center, close to 3.30pm. Hours passed throughout the day and we didn't realize. We continued our journey towards Pena Palace, on the top of the hill, but unfortunately, for just 5 minutes, they didn't allow us to buy tickets to the last visit. There was no chance beside admiring the Palace from the outside, with the feeling that we would have to come back here soon.

Ao jantar, levei a Anna ao Prego da Peixaria, uma hamburgueria portuguesa que junta o melhor de dois mundos: os hamburgueres e o peixe. Também há hamburgueres de carne, mas o de salmão e choco é a estrela da casa e a minha recomendação.

De barriga cheia, descemos ao Cais do Sodré, uma zona que há relativamente pouco tempo renasceu e que possuí uma vida nocturna, actualmente, bastante agitada. Neste bairro concentram-se bares e discotecas, cada um com o seu conceito, onde se pode ouvir e dançar um bocadinho de tudo. Nós escolhemos o Copenhagen Bar, um bar onde a diversidade musical é grande e os artistas convidados são sempre bons! Hoje tocou o Mc Ary com o Filipe Gonçalves, numa noite que nos remete às sonoridades frescas do Brasil com o nome de Rolézinho.

Não contentes com a agitação deste dia comprido, acabámos a noite no Lux, uma das discotecas mais famosas de Portugal, onde a programação electrónica é apurada.

For dinner, I took Anna to Prego da Peixaria, a Portuguese hamburger restaurant that brings together the best of both worlds: burgers and fish. There are also meat burgers, but the salmon and cuttlefish burger is the star of the house and my recommendation.

With our bellies full, we went down to Cais do Sodré, an area relatively recent that reborn and currently is owner of a nightlife quite busy. In this neighborhood focus bars and clubs, each one with its own concept, where you can listen and dance a little bit of everything. We chose the Copenhagen Bar, a bar where the musical diversity is great and the guest artists are always good! Today played Mc Ary with Filipe Gonçalves, in a night that brings us to the fresh sounds of Brazil with the name of Rolézinho.

Not happy with the excitement of this long day, we ended the night at Lux, one of the most famous clubs in Portugal, where the electronic program is very good.

From Lisbon with Love, day 2

Depois de ainda ter encontrado a Anna, a seguir ao jantar, no Bairro Alto, hoje foi difícil acordar cedo para mais um dia de passeio. Mas conseguimos! Local escolhido: Belém.

Encontrámo-nos com o Alex, um amigo da Anna, já em Belém, para um pequeno almoço nos pastéis. Após seis pastéis e três cafés, lá saímos para ver a Torre e o Padrão dos Descobrimentos. O sol brilhava lá fora e apesar do frio, a luz era maravilhosa.

Once I met Anna in Bairro Alto, after dinner, today was harder to wake up early for another day of sightseeing. But we did it! Chosen location: Belem.

We met Alex, a friend of Anna, already in Belem, for a breakfast in the most famous pastery shop of the area. After six pastries and three cafes, we went out to see the Belem Tower and the Discoveries Monument. The sun was shining outside and despite the cold, the light was wonderful.

Começámos por visitar o Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, a sua igreja e o seu Claustro. O Alex ficou encantado pela arquitectura Manuelina. 
De seguida, fomos ao Padrão dos Descobrimentos. Acho que é um dos meus monumentos Lisboetas preferido. Aqui podemos ver não só um mapa mundo com a data dos descobrimentos portugueses e quais foram as Colónias Portuguesas, como um monumento aos navegantes, com todos os navegantes Portugueses.

We began by visiting Jeronimos Monastery, its church and its cloister. Alex was delighted by the Manueline architecture.
Then we went to the Discoveries Pattern. I think it's one of my favorite monuments in Lisbon. Here we see not only a world map with the date of the Portuguese discoveries and which ones were the Portuguese Colonies, as a monument to the sailors, with all Portuguese navigators.

A ciclovia leva-nos até à Torre de Belém. Neste caso fomos a pé, mas o passeio é igualmente agradável. 

Construída em 1520, a Torre de Belém acaba por simbolizar esta região de Lisboa.

Ao lado encontra-se o Túmulo do Soldado Desconhecido. Gosto sempre de o mostrar aos que visitam Belém.

The bike path takes us to the Belém Tower. In this case we were walking, but the ride is also very nice.

Built in 1520, the Belem Tower turns out to symbolize this region of Lisbon.

Adjacent to it is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. I always like to show this monument to the ones that visit Belem.

Depois de almoço seguimos rumo a Alfama. O dia foi escurecendo e o nevoeiro foi assentando. Visitámos o Miradouro de Santa Luzia e a Sé de Lisboa, além da sua igreja. Em Alfama deixei a Anna e o Alex para que ficassem para ouvir um fado e fui trabalhar. Fado foi considerado Património Imaterial da Humnidade em 2011, e como lhes expliquei, o Fado é uma sonoridade única, muito Portuguesa. Acompanhado pela guitarra portuguesa, é carregado de emoção e mesmo quem não entende o que a letra diz, consegue com certeza compreender o sentimento.

After lunch we continue towards Alfama. The day was getting dark and the fog was settling. We visited Santa Luzia's sightseeing point and Lisbon Cathedral, besides its church. In Alfama, I left Anna and Alex for them to listen to Fado and went to work. Fado was considered as Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2011, and as I explained to them, Fado is a unique sound, very Portuguese. Accompanied by the Portuguese guitar, is full of emotion and even for those who can not understand what the lyrics says, they certainly can understand the feeling.

From Lisbon with Love

Estas ultimas semanas têm sido uma correria. Entre um part-time com horas extra e outros projectos, lá consegui mostrar a cidade de Lisboa e arredores à Anna.

A Anna chegou na terça-feira já depois de almoço. Com o tempo contado mas tanto para ver, tivemos que fazer algumas escolhas. Optei por utilizar o melhor meio de transporte para conhecer Lisboa - o eléctrico 28. Aconselho a quem visita a cidade, a adquirir um cartão recarregável de viagens (viva viagem), para que saia mais em conta. Descemos perto do Panteão Nacional, para mostrar a famosa feira da Ladra (existente às 3ª e sábados), o Panteão e o Jardim Botto Machado.

These last few weeks have been a rush. Between a part-time job with extra hours and many other projects, I managed to show Lisbon and surroundings to Anna.

Anna arrived on Tuesday already after lunch. With short time but so much to see, we had to make some choices. I chose to use the best transport to see Lisbon - the tram 28. I advise anyone who's visiting the city, to buy in advance a rechargeable travel card (called Viva Viagem), it's not so expensive as buying inside public transports. We went down near the National Pantheon, to show the famous flea market (open on Tuesdays and Saturdays), the Pantheon and the Garden Botto Machado.

Pelas ruelas fomos descendo até à Casa dos Bicos, mas antes de lá chegarmos, a fome apertou. Pelo caminho encontrámos a "Banca de Pau", um espaço aberto há cerca de um mês com produtos regionais do Nordeste Transmontano Português. Aqui comemos uma variedade de queijos e chouriços, acompanhados de um belo vinho tinto. O atendimento é extremamente simpático e os petiscos deliciosos. Que belas lojas com produtos típicos fomos encontrando.

Through the little streets and with destination to Casa dos Bicos,  we went down, but before we get there, hunger start to press. Along the way we found "Banca de Pau", a space that opened about a month ago with regional products from the North of Portugal. We eat a variety of cheeses and sausages, accompanied by a nice red wine. The treatment is very nice and the snacks delicious. Beautiful shops we found on our way with typical products.

A casa dos bicos, agora também Fundação José Saramago, tem a sua fachada revestida de pedra em forma de ponta de diamante, um exemplo de arquitectura civil residencial, de influência Italiana.

Casa dos Bicos, now also José Saramago Foundation, has its coated stone wall in diamond shape, an example of residential civil architecture with Italian influence.

Um pouco mais à frente, alcançámos o Terreiro do Paço (ou Praça do Comércio), onde  deixei a Anna, para ir trabalhar, sugerindo que visitasse o novo miradouro do Arco da Rua Augusta e o MUDE - Museu da Moda e do Design - de entrada livre.

A little further, we reached Terreiro do Paço Square (or the Commerce Square), where I left Anna to go to work, suggesting that she could visit the new sightseeing point in Arc of Rua Augusta (Augusta Street) and the MUDE - Fashion and Design Museum - free entrance.
